The Omega Oils & You

As A Nutritionist, one of my most often recommended supplements would be a balanced omega 3 and 6 combination. Whether it is for skin problems, cardiovascular health or weight control, these oils are priceless for maintaining optimal health. Researchers are now realizing that DHA, an Omega 3 oil may be the first line of defense against depression and ADD.

The Omega 3 oils DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha linolenic acid) are long chained fatty acids that play a significant role in the health of all living tissue. They are an important part of cell membrane structure and integrity as well as a potent inhibitor of systemic inflammation and platelet aggregation. The omega 6 oil GLA (Gamma Linolenic acid) is the precursor of a class of cellular hormones (prostaglandins) that profoundly influence the well being of all cells.

I’ve always advised my clients to get their nutrients from a variety of foods in their diet however, for most people their food intake comes up short. This is why supplementation is necessary. This is especially true concerning the essential fatty acids.

Today most health care professionals, not only nutritionists, tout the importance of these oils. With obesity as a growing health issue, it is important to know that these oils increase insulin sensitivity (helpful for syndrome X) as well as helping to maintain better fat to lean mass ratios.

Unfortunately the best food sources of these omega 3, i.e. cold water fish, are being examined for possible contamination. It is a fact that the top of the food chain in any ecosystem usually has the highest concentration of toxins. I am concerned with this fact and am suggesting the use of EFA’s that have been specially manufactured (molecularly distilled). Some companies have made these oils more palatable and less likely to cause stomach distress.

Taking these EFA’s on a daily basis is a great part of any optimal wellness program. Just remember to increase your intake of antioxidants to protect these oils from oxidation.
