House of Nutrition's Nutritionist, Bryan Kanner, BS CNC CNHP says:
CoQ-10, the Ubiquitous Nutrient CoQ-10 also known as ubiquinone has
been number 1 on my top ten list of supplements for many years. More studies
are coming in daily on the benefits of CoQ-10 supplementation. Whether
it is used for reversing periodontal disease, helping with cardiomyopathies
or as a protector of LDL cholesterol oxidation, this is a truly a remarkable
nutrient. Unfortunately, today the pervasive use of statin drugs seriously
depletes CoQ-10 levels.
CoQ-10 was discovered from the mitochondria of beef heart by Dr. Fred
Crane in 1957. Karl Folkers, PhD working with colleagues at Merck laboratories,
later synthesized it. CoQ-10 is intricately involved in the production
of energy within the cell. It is part of the side electron transport system
that produces ATP (adenosine triposphate). Without this energy molecule
life itself is impossible. Unfortunately, levels decline with age and
may be a contributing factor for some of the age related changes that
occur at the cellular level.
There are studies under way using up to 1200 milligrams a day of CoQ-10.
One in particular is studying the effect of this dosage in early Parkinson
patients. The hope is that the use of CoQ-10 may slow the progression
of the disease. As a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant it helps protect
LDL cholesterol from becoming oxidized and problematic within the arteries.
There is also evidence that this nutrient may help lower blood pressure.
Today, heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in this
country. It may be worth looking into using CoQ-10 as a part of a healthy
diet, exercise and supplement regiment. I recommend taking CoQ-10 with
a meal containing some fats for better assimilation. Remember prevention
(and good genetics) is the key to longevity.
Take Care,
Bryan
